From the Greek word that means "image-lovers," synonymous with iconodules, which means "image-servants." Both words refer to someone who venerates religious icons (q.v.). The terms date from the period of Iconoclasm (q.v.), and they were used to distinguish those who defended icons as sacred objects from Iconoclasts who sought to destroy them.
